Relocating
can be rather stressful. The larger the area, the more stress one may have
while relocating. Therefore, for warehouse relocation, there is a lot of
preparation that needs to happen.
First
off, there should be a business analysis. In this, we should analyze the
changes that should be made upon relocation, any drawbacks and anything else
that will help to advance the warehouse operations.
Next,
there should be a market analysis that includes where the best location would
be for the warehouse. This information should be based on the local and
regional markets, towns and businesses in the area where you would like to
relocate. A customer profile, market indicators, relevant statistics, and
customer data should all be considered. Once the preferred locations become
apparent, your business can begin to narrow down the choices to pinpoint the
exact location. A relocation team should be assigned to help in this process
and decision as well as the overall moving process.
If
your warehouse is hoping to create a new image, relocating is the best time to
perform this action of re branding. The market analysis part of the
investigation can help to find the perfect re branding tools and slogans.
Now
that your relocation team has been established, the relocation process can
begin. This process should be broken down into a four-piece timeline. You will
have the initial process, two weeks before the move, three days before the move
and then what should happen on move-in day. The initial process will narrow
down everything that needs to be moved, the people who will need to be hired
such as an interior designer and movers. The post office should be contacted to
arrange when to start sending the mail to the new address as well as the power
company. As well as a walk through of the site and initial preparations to make
the appropriate floor plans. Also, assess the equipment that you currently have
and whether to replace it, fix it or update it.
Two
weeks before the move you should update the entire schedule. Make sure the
plans are moving well while you are still on time for the move-in date and
still in the budget. Continue to stay in contact with your list of vendors. Any
unused documents, furniture or electronics can be moved over to the new
location at this time. A new team of onsite supervisors should be selected from
the current relocation team to supervise the onsite move.
Three
days before the relocation is when everyone begins to panic. Keep calm and keep
going over the schedule. Make sure that everything is on time and that
everything is now set up. Internet and phone connections should be operating,
operating systems should be installed, the furniture should be in place and the
employees should be granted access to their passes, access codes and parking
space numbers.
On
the move-in day, everything from the old warehouse should be placed into the
new space. In the old warehouse, damages should be evaluated and the premises
should be cleaned. All accounts for the warehouse should be transferred to the
new site or canceled. Everything in the warehouse should be put in place on
this day. The entire day should be documented to evaluate the relocation
process and any problems incurred.
